WATT?!?

August 9 – 18
Village Theatre First Stage
Francis J. Gaudette Theatre
303 Front Street N, Issaquah, WA 98027

Book and Lyrics by David Javerbaum • Music by Brendan Milburn
Directed by Matt Walker • Choregraphed by Crystal Dawn Munkers •
Music Directed by Aaron Jodoin

With book and lyrics penned by 12-time Emmy Award-winning David Javerbaum (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All), this over-the-top political satire musical is based on the true story of James Watt, Ronald Reagan’s infamous Secretary of the Interior. Watt is best remembered for opening millions of acres of federal land for exploitation, banning the Beach Boys from 4th of July festivities, and successfully offending nearly everyone he came across. An eclectic score by Jonathan Larson Award-winner Brendan Milburn boasts music ranging from gospel, to rock, to country, making this a brazen musical experience unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Next to Normal

Role: Diana
Directed by Jon Kretzu

April 24, 2012 – June 3, 2012
Artists Repertory Theatre
Portland, OR

Brian Yorkey (Books/Lyrics) & Tom Kitt (Music)

So what is it that defines “crazy” anyway?

Called a groundbreaking, powerhouse rock musical, Next to Normal, is a heart-swelling, searingly painful dissection of a mother’s mental illness and her suburban family trying to hold it all together. This multiple award-winning smash hit is a brave, powerfully emotional musical that takes on new territory with mix of raw energy and grace. “Like all good musicals, it breaks your heart without crushing your hope” says reviewer Charles McNulty of the Los Angeles Times.Next to Normal was nominated for 11 and won three 2009 Tony Awards and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize. Susannah Mars plays the lead in this West Coast regional theater premiere.

A Holiday Revue, a seasonal cabaret for the post-sugarplum set.

“Walking on their custom made music platform, four people emerged. Cellist Hamilton Cheifetz, percussionist Gordon Rencher, co-creator & pianist Richard Bower and finally Portland’s vocal gem, Susannah Mars. Now, I’ve heard of her before, but never HEARD her sing. Wow. What an amazing vocal & performing talent we have in Portland! I never tired of her voice & really appreciated her incorporation of emotions & playfulness into the show. What a great combination!” Sabrina Miller Portland – Stage Reviews

Ragtime

Sept. 20 — Oct. 30, 2009
Portland Center Stage
Main Stage
Portland, OR

E.L. Doctorow’s sweeping novel comes vividly to life in this Tony Award-winning musical, set against the backdrop of the ragtime craze in New York City. In it, three disparate families intertwine: a wealthy white couple; a Jewish immigrant father and his motherless daughter; and an African American ragtime musician who teaches them all about the surprising interconnections of the human heart, the limitations of justice and the unsettling consequences of dreams permanently deferred. Historical figures like Harry Houdini, J.P. Morgan and Emma Goldman also inhabit this stirring epic, but it is American popular music that carries the story, including marches, cakewalks and — of course — ragtime.

Bat Boy

Oct. 23–Nov. 23, 2003
Portland Center Stage
Newmark Theatre
Portland, OR

Story and Book by Keythe Farley & Brian Flemming
Music and Lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe
Directed by Chris Coleman

“What would a musical be without a love story? That’s right, the heart of this half-beast is fixed on the oh-so-out-of-his-league beauty Meredith. The interaction and love between the lovely lady and Bat Boy, with his pointed ears and sharp teeth, makes for a great romance and resembles the relationship between Madame de Villeneuve’s beauty and beast.

The play is directed by Chris Coleman and stars Wade McCollum (Edgar) and Susannah Mars (Meredith). Wade has intrigued Portland audiences in the past as Hedwig in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” while Susannah has also been a stage darling with her performance as Mama Rose in Portland Center Stage’s “Gypsy.” Both performers put their heart and soul into this odd, yet touching, production of “Bat Boy: The Musical.””

by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents.

Gypsy has been referred to as the greatest American musical by numerous critics and writers, “Gypsy is nothing if not Broadway’s own brassy, unlikely answer to ‘King Lear.'” Theater critic Clive Barnes wrote that ” ‘Gypsy’ is one of the best of musicals…” and described the character of Rose as “one of the few truly complex characters in the American musical….”
